Segment Analysis What piece of advice would you share with someone considering a career with First USA? There is plenty of opportunity to make a positive impact here if you are proactive, open-minded, and flexible. At First USA, the organization moves quickly. What makes First USA an attractive/desirable place to work? Quality people, interesting business problems to solve, opportunity to make a large impact on a business as large as First USA. What are your passions? I want to lead a balanced life: success at work, fun with my wife and kids, and time with my church and community. Describe First USA in five words or less. Rebuilding a large, complex business fast. Describe a typical work day. Recently, I left Strategic Planning and joined Marketing Analysis to gain some new and different experience with the management of our core credit card business. Im now involved in defining and analyzing segments of customers for our First USA brand (non-partnership) business, which represents about $37 billion in outstanding credit card loans. In particular, I have been focusing on refining the analysis for our rewards business. We have several proprietary rewards programs designed to improve customer loyalty and card usage. However, the programs are complex, they involve estimating and booking liabilities for paying rewards in the future, and so we still have room to improve the accuracy of our P&L for each of the rewards programs. I recently figured out the cause of one potential inaccuracy in the course of several meetings with people in marketing, accounting, finance, and systems. Today, I proposed a solution that involves gathering and analyzing additional data on all our rewards customers. With this analysis, we will be better equipped to decide which programs we should invest in and which ones we should discontinue. I hope to continue gaining additional experience in the management of our core credit card business, and look forward to managing my own P&L in the future. |

What piece of advice would you share with someone considering a career with First USA? Anyone interested in First USA should research the company very well - there are many different types of opportunities available throughout the company. Why did you join First USA? First USA is a company that provides very good opportunities to develop many sets of skills. Also, everyones ideas, no matter how out of the box as they might be, are taken into account. I also liked the work environment -- it is intense but friendly and relaxed at the same time. The compensation package was also extremely competitive. What makes First USA an attractive/desirable place to work? The work environment, being continuously challenged to solve new problems, and the rapid change in the credit card industry makes First USA a great place to work. Describe First USA in five words or less. Fun, challenging, intense, rewarding. Describe a typical work day. As an Assistant Vice President in Partnership Analytics, my responsibilities are to help coordinate and execute the efforts of a strategy group whose mission is to improve the bank's profitability. I have to decide how to approach different analytical problems. I also decide on the most efficient way to access and analyze information that will be used later to make strategic recommendations. The most common problems I face deal with the fact that the challenges are always new and there is no script to approach them. Creativity becomes key and that can be very challenging. I have constant interaction with my team and contact with people from other areas is very easy and since people are always work together to solve problems. |
